and a sea of humanity
Museums, libraries, culture galore
They got cable TV
How could you ask for more?
And if reality is your cup of meat
They got 42nd Street
Take a stroll downtown
and run the gauntlet
Well the mayor is a mayor
called the Mayor Abe Beame
Even dreamed up this here
Big Mac scheme
But that big scheme kinda petered out
And President Ford had to bail 'em out
I don't think his heart was in it though
If you like action, come to NYC
They got murder and rape and robbery
They got all kinds of violence
that can happen to you
They got broken glass
and dog doo-doo
A Saturday Night Special
every night of the week
They got bars in New York
that never close
And bars where the people
take off their clothes
And bars where the young folks
dance all night
And bars where a fella can pick a fight
If you want to, you can spend the night
behind bars
Well, like I said before you know
I ramble around
And meet a whole lot people out there
that put New York down
Of course half of them
ain't never been there
So some of that criticism just ain't fair
Sure I know
New York is dirty and ugly
and full of cockroaches
and gonorrhea and rats and junkies
and hookers, rude cab drivers
bad air, bad vibes and unemployment
and they don't pick up the garbage
Ah, but it's not boring

정말 굉장한 곳이야
거짓말도 아니고
헛소리도 아니야
뉴욕에는 다섯 개의

그리고 사람들로 가득해
박물관, 도서관, 풍부한 문화
케이블 TV까지 있으니
더 이상 바랄 게 뭐 있겠어
현실적인 걸 원한다면
42번가가 있어
시내를 거닐면서
직접 부딪혀 봐
뉴욕 시장은
에이브 빔이라는 사람인데
'빅맥 계획'이라는 걸
시행하려고 했었어
하지만 계획은 수포로 돌아갔고
포드 대통령이 구제금융을 지원했지만
딱히 그러고 싶진 않았던 것 같아
액션을 좋아하면 뉴욕으로 와
살인, 강간, 강도가 판치거든
당신에게 일어날 수 있는
모든 종류의 폭력이 있어
깨진 유리도 있고
개똥도 있고
매일 밤마다
총소리가 끊이질 않아
뉴욕에는 24시간
영업하는 술집이 있어
사람들이 옷을 벗는
술집도 있고
젊은이들이 밤새
춤추는 술집도 있고
싸움이 일어나는 술집도 있고
원한다면 철창 안에서
밤을 보낼 수도 있지
말했다시피
난 돌아다니면서
뉴욕을 욕하는 사람들을
많이 만났어
물론 그들 중 반은
뉴욕에 가 본 적도 없으니까
모두 정당한 비난이라곤 할 수 없지
물론 나도 알아
뉴욕은 더럽고 추악해
바퀴벌레, 성병
쥐, 약쟁이가 가득하고
매춘부, 무례한 택시기사, 매연
불쾌한 분위기에 일자리도 없고
쓰레기도 안 주워
하지만 지루하지는 않아

뉴욕시 맨해튼에 있는 42번가는 1950년대 말부터 1980년대 후반까지 성인영화관과 스트립바가 즐비했고 거리에는 마약상, 마약중독자, 매춘부, 소매치기가 많아서 위험한 곳으로 여겨졌습니다.
Big Mac scheme
20세기 중반 뉴욕은 미국 의류 제조업의 최대 집결지였으나 육로 운송이 발달하면서 1960년대 후반에서 70년대 초반 뉴욕시의 의류업은 붕괴했습니다. 30개가 넘는 제조업 일자리가 사라졌고 대규모 폭동이 일어나기도 했었죠. 1975년 말 뉴욕시의 총부채가 148억 달러에 달하자 뉴욕시장은 '빅맥 계획(Big Mac Scheme)'으로 위기를 타파하려 했으나 실패하고 결국 연방정부로부터 예산을 지원받아 간신히 파산을 면할 수 있었습니다.
참고로 '빅맥'은 햄버거와 전혀 상관없습니다. 뉴욕의 재정 모니터링 에이전시 'Municipal Assistance Corporation'의 약자인 MAC을 흔히 'Big Mac'이라 불렀습니다.
