몸이 떨리도록 추운 밤이었어
공원에는 비가 내리고 있었는데

잔뜩 숨을 죽였어
어떤 밴드가 4분의 4박자
딕시 재즈를 연주하고 있었거든
그 음악을 듣고서
기분이 좋아졌어
술집 안으로 들어섰지만
손님은 별로 없었어
비를 피해 재즈를 들으러
잠깐 들렀다 갈 뿐이었지
다른 술집도 많이 있지만
여기 트럼펫 연주는
정말 끝내줬어
정통 남부 스타일이었지
런던에서 정통 남부 스타일이라니
조지의 기타를 들어봐
그는 모르는 코드가 없어
다만, 리듬 기타만 쳐
화려한 기교는 부리지 않아
그래, 그가 가진 거라고는
낡은 기타 한 대뿐이지만
그는 조명 아래 일어서서
기타를 연주해
피아니스트 해리는
함께 연주하지 못해도 신경 안 써
그는 낮에 하는 일이 따로 있고
꽤 잘하고 있거든
그는 어떤 식으로든
홍키통크를 연주할 수 있는데
금요일 밤에 있을
Sultans와 연주를 위해
아껴두고 있어
구석에는 젊은 청년 무리가
시시덕거리고 있었는데
갈색 배기 바지에
밑창 두꺼운 신발로 멋을 내고
잔뜩 취해 있었어
그들은 트럼펫 밴드에는
아무 관심이 없어
그들이 말하는 소위 락앤롤이 아니니까
그리고 Sultans는
크리올을 연주하고 있었어
그러다가 마감벨이 울리자
마침내 한 사람이
마이크 앞에 다가서서
이렇게 말했어
"안녕히 가세요.
이제 돌아갈 시간입니다."
그러다가 재빨리
이렇게 한마디 덧붙였어
"저희는 Sultans입니다
The Sultans of Swing이에요"
