I remember sixty-nine
when I was ten years old
Just learnt how to behave myself
and do things that I'd been told
I knew I had to shut my face at school
In church I knew how not to act the fool
But I began to think a lot
and turn my head aside
I wished I led another life
but still was quite a child
I got my first guitar at twelve
I've always liked to play
I tried to say some words with it
without I could not say
I played my brother's records
every day
Noticed that this music was OK
I smoked my first cigarette that time
and drank two pints of beer
I wished I had a girlfriend
and dreamed of my career
When I first took my friend to tea
you know that I was scared
And as she looked right in my face
I wished but never dared
I never knew
that love could be that strong
I never knew what I was doing wrong
I turned my mind to politics
My thoughts were keen and bold
The more I thought the less I knew
And I felt bought and sold
I look back at the seventies
as I look upon myself
Good luck throughout the eighties
to be not put on the shelf
I'd rather have a crying heart
than get cold
I hope that I will die before I get old
And still I used to think a lot
about the things I do
And still I got a lot of friends

내가 열 살이었던
1969년을 기억해
예의 바르게 살고
말을 잘 들으라고 배웠어
학교에서는 입을 다물어야 했고
교회에서는 바보처럼 굴지 않아야 했어
하지만 생각이 많아지자
고개를 돌리게 됐어
다른 삶을 살길 바랐지만
난 여전히 어린아이일 뿐이었지
12살에 처음으로 기타가 생겼어
난 항상 연주를 좋아했고
기타로 마음을 표현하려 했어
기타 없이는 할 수 없었지
형이 갖고 있던 음반을
매일 들었고
음악이 좋다는 걸 알게 됐지
그때 담배를 처음 피우고
맥주 두 잔을 마셨어
여자 친구가 있으면 했고
내 진로를 꿈꿨지
여자 친구와 처음 차를 마실 때
난 겁먹었어
그녀는 나를 빤히 바라봤지만
난 그럴 용기가 없었어
사랑이란 게 그렇게
대단한 건 줄 몰랐어
내가 뭘 잘못하는지도 몰랐지
정치에 눈을 돌리고
생각은 예리하고 대담해졌지만
생각할수록 모르는 게 많았어
이용당한 기분이었어
나 자신을 생각하며
70년대를 돌아보고 있어
80년대에는 관심에서
멀어지지 않길 바라
차갑게 식어가느니
가슴 터지도록 울겠어
난 늙기 전에 죽고 싶어
난 아직도 내 일에 대해
많은 생각을 하곤 해
여전히 친구들도 많아
