It was not far from the place
where I was born
When times were slow and I was young
A strange young man lived in the town
We used to call him Scratch
The undertaker's son
Scratch was tall and bent
Like a willow in the wind
He couldn't speak a single word
Though something raged in him
For every night till dawn
He sat up on Pilgrim's Hill
Playin' crazed and lonely songs
On his worn out violin
The people of the town
They all laughed at Scratch with scorn
They could not see the loneliness
Inside his twisted form
All except for Mercy Shaw
Who chose to be his friend
She came to him most every night
Until the autumn's end
One dark night
on the cliffs above the town
Mercy went to meet him,
So the story goes around
Scratch turned round to take her hand
But Mercy didn't know
He heard her cry and saw her fall
To the valley down below
O the wailin' winds down in the valley
sounds like the folks are
out there cryin'
O that helpless feeling deep inside me
A man can only keep from trying
To keep from dying
You know they searched for Scratch
Many nights and days
And though they could not find him
They say his spirit stays
For every night I hear
the wailin' of a violin
I know it's only lonely Scratch

그리 멀지 않은 곳
세상이 고요했던 어릴 적
마을에 이상한 젊은이가 살았는데
우리는 그를 스크래치라고 불렀어
장의사의 아들이었지
스크래치는 키가 크고 구부정해서
바람에 흔들리는 버드나무 같았어
그는 한마디 말도 할 수 없었지만
내면에는 무언가가 들끓었어
그는 매일 밤마다 새벽까지
순례자의 언덕에 앉아
낡은 바이올린으로
미친 듯 외로운 노래를 연주했어
마을 사람들은 모두
스크래치를 조롱하며 비웃었어
사람들은 그의 뒤틀린 모습 속에
숨겨진 외로움을 볼 수 없었어
하지만 그의 친구가 되기로 한
머시 쇼는 달랐어
그녀는 가을이 다 가도록
거의 매일 밤 그를 찾아왔어
어느 어두운 밤
마을 위 절벽에
머시는 그를 만나러 갔어
소문에 따르면
스크래치는 돌아서 그녀의 손을
잡으려 했지만 그녀는 몰랐고
머시는 계곡 아래로
비명과 함께 떨어지고 말았어
오, 계곡 아래에서
울부짖는 바람소리는 마치
사람들의 울음소리 같아
오, 내 안의 깊은 무력감
사람은 죽음을 피하려고
발버둥 칠 수밖에 없어
사람들은 여러 밤낮으로
스크래치를 찾아다녔지만
그를 찾을 수 없었어
하지만 그의 영혼은 떠나지 않았대
매일 밤 울부짖는
바이올린 소리가 들리거든
그건 분명 외톨이 스크래치야
