So I packed my bags brushed my cap Walked out into the world Seventeen years old never kissed a girl Took the train to Voronezh That was as far as it would go Changed my sacks for a uniform Bit my lip against the snow I prayed for mother Russia in the summer of '43 And as we drove the Germans back I really believed that God was listening to me Then we howled into Berlin Tore the smoking buildings down Raised the red flag high Burnt the Reichstag brown I saw my first American And he looked a lot like me He had the same kinda farmer's face Said he'd come from some place called Hazzard, Tennessee Then the war was over My discharge papers came Me and twenty hundred others went to Stettiner for the train Kiev! said the commissar from there your own way home But I never got to Kiev We never came by home Train went north to the Taiga We were stripped and marched in file Up the great Siberian road for miles and miles and miles and miles Dressed in stripes and tatters in a gulag left to die All because Comrade Stalin was scared that we'd become too westernized Used to love my country Used to be so young Used to believe that life was the best song ever sung I would have died for my country in 1945 But now only one thing remains The brute will to survive		가족과 집을 떠날 때 어머니께서 이렇게 말씀하셨어 "아들아, 중요한 건 독일군을 얼마나 많이 죽이느냐가 아니라 사람들에게 자유를 가져다주는 거란다" 배낭을 꾸리고 모자를 털고 나와서 열일곱 되도록 키스도 못 해본 내가 세상으로 뛰어들었어 보로네시행 기차를 탔는데 그곳은 아무리 가도 끝이 없었어 배낭 대신 군복을 받고 흩날리는 눈발에 입술을 깨물었지 1943년 여름 나는 러시아를 위해 기도했어 차를 타고 독일 후방으로 가는 동안 하느님께서 내 기도를 듣고 계실 거라 굳게 믿었어 우리는 베를린으로 당당히 입성해서 연기 나는 건물을 무너뜨리고 붉은 깃발을 높이 휘날리며 독일 국회를 불태웠어 전장에서 처음 본 미국인 그는 나와 다를 바 없었어 농사꾼 얼굴을 하고 있던 그는 테네시주 해저드라는 곳에서 왔다고 했어 전쟁은 끝나고 나는 전역 통지서를 받았지 다른 2천 명의 동료들과 기차를 타러 슈테티너로 갔어 인민 위원은 키예프까지 간 다음 거기에서 집으로 갈 수 있다고 했어 하지만 기차는 키예프로 가지 않았고 우리는 집으로 돌아갈 수 없었지 열차는 북쪽 타이가로 향했고 우리는 장비를 몰수당하고 시베리아 대로를 따라 열을 지어 끝없이, 끝없이 행진을 했어 우리는 다 해진 죄수복을 걸치고 수용소에서 죽을 운명을 맞았지 이건 모두 스탈린 동지가 우리가 너무 서구화되는 것을 두려워했기 때문이었어 조국을 사랑한 적이 있었어 젊음을 간직한 적도 있었어 인생은 그 어떤 노래보다 멋진 노래라고 믿은 적도 있었어 나는 조국을 위해 싸우다가 1945년 전사했어야 했어 하지만 이제 남은 건 단 한 가지야 잔인한 사람만이 살아남는다는 사실뿐

대학에서 영문학과 철학을 전공한 스코틀랜드 출신 Mike Scott이 영국 런던으로 건너와서 자신의 밴드 Another Pretty Face를 해체하고 1981년 결성한 밴드가 Waterboys입니다. 1993년 잠정 해체를 선언했다가 2000년 새 앨범을 내고 활동을 재개했습니다. 밴드의 이름은 Lou Reed의 'The Kids' 가사에서 따왔다고 합니다. Red Army 1918년 소련의 공산주의 이데올로기와 군사적 대립을 배경으로 창설된 군대가 Red Army입니다. 스탈린 개인의 막강한 영향력 아래 소비에트 정권의 엄격한 통제를 받고 있었던 조직이죠. 소련에는 이미 5백만명 이상의 무장 병력이 존재하고 있었지만 1941년 독소 전쟁 발발 초기 10일간 다시 5백만명의 병력이 동원령에 따라 소집되었습니다.
