원작자는 미국 오레곤 주 포틀랜드 출신의 밴조 연주자 Derroll Adams(1925~2000)입니다. 16세에 군대에 입대하고 해안경비대에서도 근무했던 그는 한국전쟁을 기리며 1957년에 이 곡을 썼습니다. Derroll은 1950년대에 미국 West Coast scene에서 활동하다 영국으로 건너갔는데 거기서 Donovan을 후계자로 맞아들이고 그에게 많은 영향을 준 것으로 알려져 있습니다.
