It Used To Be That Not Everybody Was A Lighthouse (1970)

Walking past on aging man
whose playing days have gone
He knows inside he must press on
Stepping down to the underground
You know just where he's been
He's got a long-standing reputation
not to sin

Strolling through a foggy breeze
a Soho street at noon
The girl upstairs in the tiny room
You'd want to meet her
Yet you've know her all the while
She's got a long-standing reputation not to smile

Having tea so publicly
amidst the busy crowd
A friendly pauper sings out loud
But soon he's banished
and there's nothing he can say
He's got a long-standing reputation
not to pay

The categories fall discretely
There's nothing else done
quite so neatly

Heading back to Paddington
along the circle line
Asking those around me for the time
Their eyes would glow if they'd only
know where my next stop would be
I've got a long-standing reputation
to be free
