1979년 1월 29일 미국에서는 또
한번의 학내 총기 난사 사건이 있었습니다.
샌디에고에 사는 Brenda Spencer라는
여학생이 학급 친구들에게 무차별
총격을 가한 충격적 사건이었죠. 사건
직후 조사 과정에서 범행 동기를 묻는
질문에 대한 그녀의 대답이 바로 'I
don't like Mondays'였습니다.
가수의 이미지 보다는 오히려 Pink
Floyd의 1982년 영화 <The Wall>에
나온 배우로 잘 알려진 Bob Geldof가
주축이 되어 만든 아일랜드 밴드 Boomtown
Rats의 두 번째 영국 차트 넘버원
히트곡인 이 노래는 바로 이 엽기
여학생이 저지른 사건을 소재로 만들어졌는데,
수 많은 신청에도 불구하고 한동안
방송국에서 비공식 금지곡으로 묶여
있었습니다. 곡의 내용도 문제
거리가 됐겠지만 그 보다는 범행을
저지른 여학생의 부모로부터 소송에
걸릴까봐 걱정스러웠기 때문이었죠.
