Elegant Hobo
- Paul Geremia -

Paul Geremia (1971)

He was such an elegant hobo
His bottle held the sun
And his gestures
conjured Shakespeare
'till every drink was done

And his clothes befitting orphans
of the alleys and the docks
The hours we spent listening to his
tales turned back the scornful clock

For his life had been a chasm
filled with mansions, love and greed
And you could see
without really looking he'd been
down on every dead end streets

And time, that guiltless changer
had left its mark on this man's face
with lines of age and anguish
Even his smile could not erase

And as he told his stories
The listeners would gather 'round
All the knowing ones
would shake their heads
And the wealthy man would frown

For he was on the bottom
But he'd been where the bottom was up
So he knew that one man's whiskey
bottle was another man's silver cup
