The Kinks는 가장 유명한 대표곡인 'You Really Got Me' 때문에 흥겹고 비트 있는 초기 락앤롤 사운드만 구사하는 밴드로 잘못 인식되기도 하는데 포크록에서 팝, R&B, 오페라까지 폭넓은 음악성을 자랑했습니다. Oasis나 Blur도 Kinks에게 영향을 받았다고 하죠. 1973년 발표되어 영국에서의 실망스런 결과와는 반대로 미국에서 성공을 거둔 이 앨범은 스튜디오에서 녹음한 작품들과 카네기 홀에서 녹음한 라이브로 이루어진 더블앨범입니다. Kinks의 리더로서 곡을 쓴 Ray Davies 최고의 작품이라 불려도 손색이 없을 이 곡은 왕년의 헐리우드 스타의 흥망과 성쇠를 노래하고 있고, 앨범 타이틀 역시 이 곡의 가사에서 따왔습니다.
