My child arrived just the other day
He came to the world in the usual way
But there were planes
to catch and
bills to pay
He learned to walk
while I was away
And he was talking 'fore I knew it
And as he grew, he'd say
"I'm

And the cat's in the cradle

the silver spoon
Little Boy Blue
and the Man on the Moon
"When
you coming home, Dad?"
"I
don't know when
But we'll get together
then
You know we'll have a good
time then"
My son turned ten just the other
day
He said, "Thanks for the
ball, Dad
Come on, let's play
Can you teach me to throw?"
I said, "Not today, I got a lot
to do"
He said, "That's
ok"
And he walked away
But his smile
never dimmed
And said, "I'm
gonna be like him, yeah
You know
I'm gonna be like him"
Well, he came home
from college
just the other day
So much like
a man I just had to say
"Son,
I'm proud of you
Can you sit for
a while?"
He shook his head
And then said with a smile
"What
I'd really like, Dad, is
to borrow
the car keys
See you later
Can
I have them please?"
I've long since retired
My son's
moved away
I called him up just
the other day
I said
"I'd like to see
you if you don't mind"
He said
"I'd love to, Dad, if I can find
the time
You see my new job's a
hassle
and kids have the flu
But it's sure nice talking to you, Dad
It's been sure nice talking to you"
And as I hung up the phone
It
occurred to me
He'd grown up just
like me
Yeah, my boy was just like
me

며칠 전 아들이 태어났어
별 탈
없이 평범하게 세상에 나왔지
하지만
난 갚아야 할 빚이 있었기에
비행기를
타러 떠났고
내가 없는 사이 아들은
걸음마를 배웠어
그리고 내가 모르는 사이 말을 배우고
아들은 자라면서 이렇게 말하곤 했어
"저는 아버지처럼 될 거예요
아버지 같은 사람이 될 거예요"

달에 간 남자
"아빠, 언제 집에 오실 거죠?"
"나도 모른단다
하지만 집에
돌아가게 되면
함께 즐거운 시간을
보내자꾸나"
며칠 전 열 살이 된 아들이 말했어
"아빠, 공 사주셔서 고마워요
같이 공놀이해요
공 던지는 것도
가르쳐 주세요"
"할 일이
있어서 오늘은 안 되겠다"
아들은
"괜찮아요"라고 말하고
걸어 나갔지만
그는 웃음을 잃지
않고 이렇게 말했어
"난 아빠
같이 될 거예요
아빠 같은 사람이
될 거예요"
건장한 청년이 되어
며칠 전 대학에서
돌아온
아들에게 난 이렇게 말해야
했어
"아들아, 네가 정말 자랑스럽구나
잠깐 앉아 볼래?"
아들은 고개를
젓더니
웃으며 이렇게 말했어
"지금 제가 정말 하고 싶은 건
자동차 키를 빌리는 거예요
나중에
뵐게요
빌려 주실 거죠?"
난 오래전에 은퇴를 했고
아들은
살림을 따로 차렸어
며칠 전 아들에게
전화를 해서
이렇게 말을 건넸지
"괜찮다면
한번 보고 싶구나"
아들은 이렇게
말했지
"시간이 나면 저도 그러고
싶지만
아시다시피 새 직장 일로 정신
없고
애들이 지금 독감에 걸렸어요
하지만 아버지랑 얘기라도
할 수
있어서 기뻐요"
전화를 끊었을 때
문득 이런 생각이
들었어
그도 나처럼 되었다고 말이야
내 아들도 나처럼 되고 말았어
