closed early today
Help wanted said sign on the door
For the man that did the sweeping
and the cleaning of the bar was found
today in his kitchen on the floor
They say he fought in the big war
and was a hero of his time with
ticker-tape parade in New York streets
And he had a bunch of medals
he used to brag about
But lately he just talked of needin' sleep
Bottles of booze don't take away scars
Heroes and losers seem to
all end up in bars
Medals and memories
mold and fade away
Friends, Willy Blanton died
a lonely death today
Someone smelled some gas
So they kicked in some glass
and found Willy cold on the floor
His head was on his shoulder
and his hands were at his side
holding headlines
he'd never read no more
Scattered on the table were
the medals that he'd won
and a picture of a smiling soldier boy
But the sadness in the eyes told of
age before their time and how fate
and fame had found another toy
Old Willy made the news again
But I don't think he'd care
He never liked to read or watch TV
I guess he finally found
that a bottle and a broom couldn't
hold him up or keep him company
So the ambulance driver covered
Willy's eyes, turned his headlights on
drove away
But somewhere in the distance
rose a sad silent sound
And I'll swear I heard
a lonesome bugle play

오늘을 일찍 문을 닫았고
문에는 구인공고가 붙어 있었어
그 술집 청소 담당 직원이
오늘 자기 집 주방에서
쓰러진 채 발견되었거든
사람들은 그가 큰 전쟁에서 싸우고
뉴욕 거리에서 시가행진을 했던
당대의 영웅이었고
자랑하던 메달도
많이 갖고 있었지만
최근엔 자고 싶다고만 했대
술로는 상처를 지울 수 없어
영웅과 패자는 결국 모두
술로 끝나게 되나 봐
메달과 추억은
만들어졌다가 서서히 사라져
친구들, 윌리 블랜튼이
오늘 외롭게 세상을 떠났어
누군가 가스 냄새를 맡고
창문을 깨고 들어가서
바닥에 쓰러진 윌리를 발견했어
고개는 축 처지고
손을 옆으로 늘어뜨린 채
더 이상 읽지 못할
신문을 쥐고 있었지
식탁 위에는 그가 받은
메달이 흩어져 있고
미소 짓는 어린 병사 사진이 있었는데
그 눈에 어린 슬픔은 운명과 명예의
또 다른 노리개가 돼버린
과거 세대를 말해주고 있었어
늙은 윌리는 다시 뉴스를 장식했지만
그는 그다지 신경 쓰지 않았을 거야
독서나 TV 보는 걸 좋아하지 않았거든
윌리는 술과 빗자루로는
그를 지탱하거나 함께 할 수 없다는 걸
마침내 깨달았을 거야
구급차 기사는 윌리 눈을 가리고
헤드라이트를 켜고
그를 싣고 떠났어
그런데 저 멀리 어딘가에서
서글픈 나직한 소리가 들려왔어
그 소리는 분명
외로운 나팔 소리였어
