In 1814 we took a little trip along with Colonel Jackson down the mighty Mississip We took a little bacon And we took a little beans And we caught the bloody British in the town of New Orleans We fired our guns And the British kept a coming There wasn't nigh as many as there was a while ago We fired once more And they began to running down the Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico We looked down the river And we seed the British come And there must have been a hundred of 'em beating on the drum They stepped so high And they made their bugles ring We stood behind our cotton bales And didn't say a thing Old Hickory said we could take 'em by surprise if we didn't fire our muskets till we looked 'em in the eyes We held our fire till we seed their faces well Then we opened up our squirrel guns and gave 'em Yeah they ran through the briars And they ran through the brambles And they ran through the bushes where a rabbit couldn't go They ran so fast that the hounds couldn't catch 'em down the Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico We fired our cannon till the barrel melted down So we grabbed an alligator And we fought another round We filled his head with cannonballs and powdered his behind And when we touched the powder off the gator lost his mind		1814년에 잭슨 대령과 함께 저 기다란 미시시피 강 아래로 길을 나섰어 베이컨과 콩을 조금씩 먹으며 나아가다가 뉴 올리언스에 있는 마을에서 영국 군대를 만났어 우리는 총을 쐈지만 영국군은 계속 밀려들었어 조금 전보다는 가까이에 있는 적의 수가 줄었어 아군이 다시 한번 발포하자 적군은 미시시피 강 하구에서 멕시코만까지 줄행랑치기 시작했어 강 아래를 내려다보니 영국군이 다가오는 게 보였어 북을 치며 오는데 백 명쯤은 되었을 거야 영국군이 나팔을 불며 당당하게 걸어올 때 우린 목화 더미 뒤에 숨어서 숨을 죽이고 있었어 적군이 시야에 들어오기 전까지 발포하지 않으면 급습할 수 있을 거라고 히커리 장군은 말했어 그래서 우린 놈들의 얼굴이 잘 보일 때까지 잠자코 있다가 22 구경 총으로 발포를 하고 놈들에게 본때를 보여줬어 놈들은 가시나무로도 도망치고 관목 사이로도 튀고 덤불을 헤치며 도망쳤어 토끼도 못 가는 데를 말이야 미시시피 강 하구에서 멕시코 만까지 도망치는데 어찌나 빠르던지 사냥개도 못 따라잡겠더라고 대포를 얼마나 쐈는지 포신이 녹아내렸어 그래서 우린 악어를 잡아다가 다시 한바탕 하기로 했어 악어 머리에다 대포알을 채우고 궁둥이에다 화약을 바르고 점화를 했더니 악어가 어쩔 줄 모르더군

시골에서 6학년 아이들을 가르치는 교사였던 Jimmy Driftwood는 아이들에게 좀더 쉽고 재미있게 역사를 가르치기 위해 노래를 만들기 시작했는데 평소에 공부에는 무관심하던 아이들까지도 그가 만든 노래는 무척이나 좋아했다고 합니다. 이에 고무된 그는 계속해서 노래를 만들었고 녹음까지 했습니다. 그러던 어느날 새벽 2시, 일을 끝내고 차를 몰고 집으로 돌아가던 Johnny Horton은 우연히 라디오에서 이 노래를 듣고 자기가 한번 불러 봐야겠다고 마음 먹었습니다. 이 곡은 1959년 발표되자마자 컨츄리 차트와 팝 차트에 올랐고 그 해 여름에 두 차트 정상을 차지하고 나서 그래미상까지 수상했습니다. 그 덕에 시골 학교 교사 Jimmy Driftwood도 전국 방송에까지 출연하고 유명인사가 됐습니다.
