Poets Need The Rain
- Tim Murphey -

Poets Need The Rain (1979)

I just borrowed this pen
From the waitress serving me
She brought me my beer
And smiled quietly
And this brown paper bag I'm writing on
I found it in the midnight streets outside

I just thought you'd like to know
I've been gazing at the moon
Talking to the stars
As I played my guitar
And the winter wind's coming down
The mountains of my mind
Said tonight's the night
I'll be jumping from St. George's bridge

P.S.
Don't you worry none
I've heard false notes before
And more than a few
Have I made into song
Rivers and tears
Only seem to make me strong
I said pain was born with love
And you said I was wrong
And you were right I know
But poets need the rain

Well I've got to hurry now
Cause the cafe's closing
I'll leave this note on your window sill
You can read it in the morning
When first you rise
I never was one for soft goodbyes
