Midwest Farm Disaster
- Bob Martin -

Midwest Farm Disaster (1972)

Lorney Taylor died last week
She couldn't take no more
of welfare line and real hard times
living so long so poor
The bank took back the farm one day
Lorney Taylor died of grief
Just one more farm in many
That's been taken by a thief

All across the midwest
Can't you see what's going on
The farms are all abandoned
And the farmers mostly gone
The few remaining families
might stay for a year or so with their
backyard gone to prairie grass
and their fields where nothing grows

It's a sad and long, long story
Wish I had the tiem to tell
how the taxes took the money
and the farm just went to hell
Sheep have all gone wool blind
Dog has got the mange
Plow horse got the hoof-and-mouth
He'll never be the same

Dust blow down the empty plain
You can hear it whining
through the barn door swing wide
with the change of wind
But there's nothing left on this old farm
Dead cat looking from the windowsill
Clock don't move on the wall
It keep no time till the farm come back
If it ever come back at all

Train load up on the company farm
Grain car ready to fill
They're moving all night
Cause the price is right
After going through the company mill
The downtown have just one light on
Where the two main roads meet
It's old wheat seeds
and yellow weeds growing
through the middle of the street
