Mariposa
- Gerry O'Kane -

Gerry O'Kane (1976)

I loved you in a thunderstorm
while pagan drums were rolling
And on Summer Solstice days of calm
We met at Mariposa

In salad days and sorrowed days
We spent out time together
Discussing wars and marriages
If such things last forever

I loved you in a deathly hour
The guns were loudly speaking
In oppressions chains
I spoke your name
when riots came in roaring

We ran the streets of death's defeat
Sought shelter from the cannons
Stood by graves where black flags fell
While the people's flag sang freedom

I loved you on a fragrant day
The seeds to heaven bursting
By the greatest lake, we never knew
the reason for our thirsting

Yet still we talked the night away
The light in marble burning
Confused as that, yet sure as rock
We parted in the morning
